Twas the weekend before Christmas, and all through Nashville good rock shows were happening.

Seriously, there are plenty of good shows to see this weekend, many of which are “end of the world” parties tonight. Personally I’m already very sick of this end of the world bullshit but whatever. Here are my picks: (FYI, this will probably be my last post of the year, as I’m beginning my official holiday break tomorrow.)

A Few Good Shows: 12/14/12

December 14, 2012

First off, a huge apology for the lack of posts this week. I’ve been in the process of buying a new car all week and between that & work & everything else I’ve just been overwhelmed. But A Few Good Shows will never fail! Here are my picks for shows to check out this weekend in Nashville:

End-12-14-12FlierFRIDAY:

Hanzelle, Scale Model, and Anchor Thieves @ The End. 9pm $5 I really hope you can come to this show not only because my band is playing, but also because it’s a very solid lineup of fantastic, hard-working local bands. We’ll also have Jeff Leet on hand selling limited edition copies of the awesome linocut poster he designed and printed for us!

Wild Cub w/ The Non-Commissioned Officers and Glass Anchor @ The Stone Fox. 9pm $5

This is the perfect recipe for chaos and mayhem of the best kind possible, so if you’re going, hang on tight- it’ll be a wild one.*

Ponychase, Bows and Arrows, Money Cannot Be Eaten, and Grandfather Child @ The Basement. 9pm $5 21+

That’s it! Have a great weekend!

Remember last fall/winter when you could go to La Paz (now in Ombi Bar’s old digs on Elliston) and dance the night away with DJ Potamus and friends every Friday? Yeah, it was called La Paz Late Night, and though the former owner put the brakes on it after a few months, the new owner is all about some dance parties, so Potamus and I have brought LPLN back from the grave! We’re gonna be doing it on the monthly instead of the weekly, and the first party of the new era is THIS SATURDAY: Tacky Holidisco. We’ve enlisted the help of DJ collective/blog/party promoters Vitalic Noise as well, and between the three of us it should be a party to remember, every month. We’ll be spinning a smooth mix of classic disco, nu disco, french house, and electro. We also have some irresistible drink deals- $2.50 PBRs, $4 Margaritas, and a round of $2 jello shots at midnight. We will also have a special prize for the tackiest holiday get-up. As always, dark corner makeout sessions are encouraged. What more could you ask for on a Saturday night? Here’s the skinny, in case you didn’t feel like actually reading all that:

La Paz Late Night Presents: Tacky Holidisco

THIS SATURDAY DEC 4th at La Paz Mexican Restaurant: 2214 Elliston Pl.

FREE 10-11pm, $3 after 11, ages 21+ only

$2.50 PBRs/$4 margaritas/$2 jello shots at midnight

Disco/house/electro by DJs Potamus, Burgers, and Vitalic Noise

For a sample of what you’ll hear, check out my latest mixtape BURGERS Fall 2010 MIXXXX below, or tune into 91.1 WRVU tonight from 6-8pm, as I’ll be performing a mini-mix on Sam & Kelly Patton’s awesome show Penguin Parade.

I came across this intriguing blog called Movies in Frames via Kottke.org today. It has a plethora of various movies that the contributors have summed up (or at least attempted to sum up) in 4 frames. Some are not very effective, but some are. More visually-oriented films such as Heima, Little Miss Sunshine, and Darjeeling Limited work well. The one you see above is Stand By Me, which reminds me that I need to see this movie agian.

Tonight is the night! The Camera Obscura show is finally happening. To my knowledge, they’ve never played Nashville before, and it’s LOOOONG overdue. I can’t wait. If you like melancholy yet catchy twee pop… or if you like Scottish accents… by all means come to this show! You won’t regret it. Their show a couple years ago at the 40 Watt in Athens was one of the best shows I’ve ever seen. Mercy is no 40 Watt (sorry Drew/Bruton), but this is probably the best venue for them to play in town. They’ve also been tweeting about Nashville since they arrived yesterday. Follow them.

The Opryland Hotel started a new summer weekly event last year Friday nights called “Poolapalooza” featuring local bands, the Cascades pool, and a good bar. It went over pretty well from what I’ve heard (I never attended one), and I certainly hope Megan & I can make it out to one this summer. Check Nashvillest or the Gaylord Website for the full lineup/dates. Each event is free, 21+ all-ages (thx to Morgan for catching my error), and starts at 7pm. That means you can get wet, drink some margaritas, hear some rock, and be done in time to hit up another show later in the evening!

Nashville Cream reports that 3 local fashion designers are finalists to be on the show Project Runway. As with most posts on there, there’s plenty of bickering in the comments. But it just wouldn’t be the Cream without them. I know Shea and Amanda, but I don’t know Shannon at all. What I do know is that everyone I’ve met involved with Local Honey and the local fashion scene is super-nice and very down-to-earth. I sincerely hope to see one of them on the show soon!

Oh yeah… Meg White married Jackson Smith and “little” Jack Lawrence married Jo McCaughey in a double-wedding in Jack White’s backyard on Friday. Obviously Jack & Jo didn’t immediately embark on their honeymoon because we saw him at Fido on Monday.

My only science-y bit today is to tell you to go sign the petition on the website for Space Exploration Day. This is an attempt to get the government to recognize July 20th as National Space Exploration Day. This July 20th will mark the 40th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing. I whole-heartedly agree that this should be an officially-recognized holiday. Supposedly it will be on same level as Flag Day.

Today I leave you with this hilarious little cartoon found at dontstaylong’s tumblr.
