Ladies, be careful when you watch this video… you just might get pregnant. This takes ridiculous to whole new level, and re-affirms my opinion that Dave 1 is one of the suavest men alive. Every man secretly wants to be this guy. Well, every straight man… gay men probably just want him.

I have respect for all genres of music, but I really just can’t bring myself to like dubstep. It just hurts my brain. But this dubstep/Transformers mashup video I came across via The A.V. Club is pretty great:

So this weekend is rather “meh” with the show offerings around town. But here are a few I suggest.

FRIDAY:

Delicate Steve and Colorfeels @ The Basement. 9pm $10 21+ (I mean, how can I not include Delicate Steve?!?)

SATURDAY:

The Non-Commissioned Officers w/ The Royal Bangs and Spiderfriends @ The End. 9pm $10

Boom Bap @ The 5 Spot. 9pm $5 21+

If you’re in Murfreesboro I’d recommend checking out Neutral Skate Supply. They’ve tapped PUJOL, Single Mothers, and King Arthur to celebrate their grand opening. Starts at 5pm.

And I leave you with this:

Have a great weekend!

This post on Universe Today prompted me to write up my own little plug for the Science Channel’s new(ish) show Through the Wormhole with Morgan Freeman. The show is in its second season and is seeing more success than your average run-of-the-mill science show. Obviously having a celebrity figure like Morgan Freeman as the host is big reason for that, but watch the show and you’ll really understand why. It’s just uncannily appealing to hear Freeman’s warm, grandfatherly voice talking about quantum entanglement, time travel, string theory, relativity and all sorts of other fascinating topics that are at the very edge of modern science. The context and delivery of the information is unique, too. It’s hard to present what most average folks regard as “mumbo-jumbo” in a way that keeps them interested for a whole hour, but this show manages to pull it off. Freeman’s own genuine interest in the subject matter is definitely a big reason the show is successful; he has always had a keen interest in these edgey topics and simply decided to make a show in which he both asks these questions to real scientists who are working to answer them and attempts to share that sense of awe and wonder that inspired him to ask said questions to begin with. Tonight’s episode focuses on the question “can we travel faster than light?” This is obviously a very important question to answer if mankind is ever to explore beyond our own solar system. All those convenient workarounds (warp drives, hyper-space windows, wormholes, etc…) you see in science fiction actually have some basis in real scientific principles, and I suspect we’ll get much clearer and layman-friendly explanation than ever before of those principles on tonight’s episode. It airs at 10pm eastern/9pm central on the Science Channel, which most of you should now get if you have regular cable or satellite service.

It’s that time of year again- when we use our nation’s birthdate as an excuse to drink in excess, eat lots of unhealthy food, and blow shit up. What could possibly be more American than that? In addition to all your weekend plans that my involve any combination of those activities, here are some good shows you might consider checking in out if you’re around Nashville.

FRIDAY:

We Were the States, Heartbeater, Mom & Dad, The Grayces @ The End. 9pm $5

My So-Called Band: The Ultimate 90’s Summer Jam @ Mercy Lounge. 9pm $10 ($12 DOS)

SATURDAY:

Hanni El Khatib w/ Sex Bombs and Rebel Surfers @ The End. 9pm $8

SUNDAY:

The Coathangers, Feral Beat, Denny & The Jets @ The Basement. 9pm 21+ $5 (It’s the Basement’s pre July 4th weenie roast with FREE hotdogs till they run out!)

JULY FUCKING 4TH!

Brandon Jazz presents: 8 off 8th, AMERICA STYLE ft. BJ & His Armed Forces, Bravo Max, Tesla Rossa, The Billy Goats, Dungeon Honey, Tex Rambunctious, Uncle Sam @ Mercy Lounge. 9pm FREE 21+ (This will be the debut of Brandon Jazz’s new music video for “Deal With It.”

That’s it. Have a great weekend, blow some stuff up (not yourself!), party hard, and don’t get arrested.

A-Trak and his Fool’s Gold Records team seem to have taken a page from the Jack White play book and opened their very own record store/swag store in Brooklyn, NY. I shouldn’t have to say that I’m a huge fan of just about everything Fool’s Gold and/or A-Trak does, and this just makes it even better. You can bet I will be paying them a visit next I’m in the Big Apple. One thing is pretty clear here- the similarities between what Jack White has done with his Third Man Records here in Nashville and what A-Trak is doing with his Fool’s Gold Records in NYC. I feel like A-Trak is headed for a similar status in the hip hop/dance/DJ realm as Jack White has built in the rock realm. They both have opened storefronts in their respective cities with an exquisitely curated style and vision, but also their respective labels consist of top-notch talent and everything about both of their brands has a sense of organic, home-grown quality to it. Next in line: Mac McCaughn and a Merge Records store in Chapel Hill, NC?

Gotta keep it short and sweet today. Pretty slim pickin’s this weekend but here are a few shows around Nashy this weekend worth checking out:

FRIDAY:

Natalie Prass, Andrew Combs, Matt Campbell @ The 5 Spot. 9pm $5 21+ (I know, three first-name/last-names on a bill, but these are better than your average Nashville first-name/last-names.)

The Long Players performing The Rolling Stones album Sticky Fingers @ the Frist Center for the Visual Arts. 6-9pm. Check out the Frist website for prices. This is an especially cool event becuase it’s the opening for the Frist’s premier summer exhibit Warhol Live: Music and Dance in Andy Warhol’s Work. The Long Players will also have a special guest saxophonist- Bobby Keys, who played on the Stones’ tracks “Can You Hear Me Knockin'” and “Brown Sugar.”

SATURDAY:

Heypenny, PDA, Sleepy Vikings @ The Basement. 9pm 21+ $10

Alcohol Stuntband, The Black Faces, Satan’s Youth Ministers, and The Fastboys @ FooBar. (No idea about the price because their website is down/under construction.)

Have a great weekend!

Here’s a quick rundown of good shows I recommend seeing this weekend in Nashville.

FRIDAY:

The Spits, TV Ghost, Cy Barkley, Diarrhea Planet, Hans Condor @ The End. 9pm $8.

Chubby & The Dots w/ Brown Chicken Brown Cow String Band @ The Basement. 9pm 21+ $5. I’ve no idea about the latter, but the C & the D’s feature members of the Non-Commissioned Officers playing the swingin’ sounds of the 30’s and 40’s.

SATURDAY:

White Denim w/ Ghostfinger and ??? @ The Basement. 9pm 21+ $8

Shoot the Mountain w/ Chrome Pony @ the 5 Spot. 9pm 21+ $5

KORT in-store performance @ Grimey’s. 5pm- FREE

Breakbot is a DJ/producer from France and is signed to Ed Banger Records. It should come as no surprise that I’m an avid fan, since his tracks or remixes have appeared in just about every mix I’ve made as DJ Burgers over the past couple years. His latest track “Fantasy ft. Ruckazoid” is an instant floor-filler and the video for it just hit the interwebs. Scope it out below. Dare I say it’s not quite as awesome as the one for last year’s jam “Baby I’m Yours,” but it’s entertaining and fits the song perfectly.

Have a great weekend!

The Rosebuds have been around since 2003, and were one of those “awww it’s a husband/wife band” bands. Little did I know that they’d been going through relationship issues over the past couple of years… in fact, Kelly Rosebud packed up an moved to Brooklyn, NY alone. Amazingly, they put their personal issues aside and made a record, which is coming out June 7 on Merge, called Loud Planes Fly Low. I caught the band opening for British Sea Power at Mercy Lounge several years back… 2008 I believe… and I remember it being a pretty good show. Good enough that I checked out their album Night of the Furies. You won’t find any soaring disco anthems like “Get Up Get Out” on Loud Planes Fly Low, but how could one expect that given the circumstances under which this album was made? These songs are much more honest and emotionally charged than ever before, and all in all the album has a more earnest feel than Night of the Furies. But I can’t compare it with other albums because I only have a few tracks from the rest of their discography. Overall this is a good album. Here’s the track “Come Visit Me”:

The Rosebuds – Come Visit Me (download)

MoogFest is back in 2011, and the lineup is absolutely phenomenal. I wanted to go last year because A) the lineup was awesome, B) the whole idea was awesome, C) Asheville is a pretty cool town. This year, I just don’t see how I can miss it. All efforts will be made to attend. I mean, just look at this freaking lineup:

Consider me there.

If you haven’t heard about The Daily Beast’s preposterous proclamation that Nashville is the nation’s most sober city, then you must be utterly disconnected from the internet, as it’s gotten a lot of local blog/media coverage. So much that Yelp, along with the Nashville Scene and many local alcohol-serving establishments have teamed up to dispel such a hideous myth. (BTW, I highly recommend their iPhone/Android app if you’re the type to “check-in” to local hotspots.) There are tons of bars with tons of drink specials all week long, but the main event called “Band of Boozers” is tonight, starting at the Yazoo taproom. Show up at Yazoo at 5pm, drink some of the finest local suds around, then join the 1/2 mile march (gotta burn off those beer calories!) to Mercy Lounge for even more drink deals and entertainment from BETA and the Neon Panthers, plus DJ sets by my pal Vitalic Noise and Wild Cub. I, along with Yelp and everyone actually involved with this, encourage passionate but responsible drinking. Let’s prove these Daily Beasts wrong! If you need more encrouragement, just watch this expert commercial filmed and produced by my pal Seth Graves:
