Mar9th-StoneFox-WEBBefore I get to to our regularly scheduled show listings, I must take a moment to shamelessly plug my band Scale Model’s show Saturday at The Stone Fox. Joining us on the bill is the awesome and sexy Ponychase, as well as the fresh new sounds of Nudity. DJ John Brassil will also be spinning your favorite 80s new wave & post punk between bands. I know, there are a shit ton of good shows happening this weekend, but if you’re not feeling Freaky or Rosey, come see us! The Stone Fox is the best venue of its size in town, and this 80s/synth-heavy bill was custom-tailored to fill the void left by those other big shows. Now for the show listings:

In the wake of the tragic death of Freakin’ Weekend founder Ben Todd, those who worked with him on it have stepped in to make sure this year’s installment of the festival/celebreation/freak-out will go off without a hitch. Indeed, yesterday the full schedule was posted over at Nashville’s Dead, and this year is gonna freak harder than ever before. The above poster was designed by Julia Bee and Ben Todd, and will be available to purchase at the pop-up record store Friday and Saturday. This year they introduced the option to buy a full weekend, three-day pass which guarantees entry into all three shows, and will save you a few bucks compared to buying individual tix for each night. Grab those here, because with this lineup you won’t want to miss a single act! Here’s a quick rundown of the lineup, but be sure to head over to Nashville’s Dead for full details.

Thursday March 7th @ The End:
Quintron & Miss Pussycat
Natural Child
Ranch Ghost
PUJOL
Slammers

Friday March 8th @ Exit/In:
The Black Lips
White Fence
Ex-Cult
D. Watusi
Crime Wave

Saturday March 9th @ Exit/In:
JEFF the Brotherhood
Diarrhea Planet
Cy Barkley & The Way Outsiders
OGG
The Orwells

The pop-up record store and daytime shows will go down at Local Honey (2009 Belmont Blvd) Friday and Saturday 12-5pm, with bands starting at 3pm.

This year’s gonna be a blast so get your freak on!

This weekend’s show listings are clearly dominated by the Freakin’ Weekend, but there are some other very notable things going on if you’re not feelin’ freaky deaky. Check it:

Maps & Atlases, Casa Castile and Santah @ Mercy Lounge. 9pm $10

Heypenny, James Wallace & the Naked Light, Antennas Up @ The High Watt. 9pm $8 (The High Watt is the new side-stage in Mercy Lounge. For more on that check out the Cream’s coverage of the stage’s debut show.)

That’s all I got for ya. Have a great weekend!

For the third year in a row, local music blog Nashville’s Dead is hosting their Freakin’ Weekend festival. It all kicks off tonight at The End with a special all-ages show featuring Screaming Females, Titus Andronicus, Diarrhea Planet, and No Regrets Coyote. Thursday night things jump across the street to Exit/In for The Greenhornes, PUJOL, Ranch Ghost, Denny & The Jets, and Dirty Dreams. Friday night’s show stays at Exit/In for Jeff the Brotherhood, Cy Barkley & the Way Outsiders, D. Watusi, Useless Eaters, and Fox Fun. Then we jump back across Elliston Place to The End for the finale on Saturday: Traditional Fools, Mikal Cronin, The Men, Heavy Cream, and Cannomen.

Also, returning from last year’s Freakin’ Weekend is the pop-up shop at Local Honey! Not only can you grab limited releases, vinyl, tapes, etc… from labels like Infinity Cat, Nashville’s Dead, Turbo Time, Third Man, Cass, Sebastian Speaks and many more, but on Friday & Saturday you can also catch great free day shows in the back lot as well! Head over to Nashville’s Dead for the full lineup+details. Major props to Ben Todd & his crew for making such a cool string of shows happen. They’ve really upped the ante this year by nailing a few bigger-name headliners, most notably The Greenhornes, whose rhythm section shares duties with The Raconteurs.

Another very related tidbit: Spin.com just debuted the first single from PUJOL’s first official full-length on Saddle Creek, DIY2K, via a free download. If this track is any indication, this is gonna be one phenomenal album. It drops June 5th.

Shows this weekend

March 4, 2011

As usual, I’m in a time crunch between work stuff.

As I mentioned Wednesday, Nashville’s Dead’s Freakin’ Weekend is happening all weekend, so go checkout their “Rundown” post about the lineups for that. If you aren’t inclined to see every night of the FW, here are some other shows I’d recommend.

FRIDAY:

The Nobility w/ Bravo Max, the Tendoor, and Overzealous @ the 5 Spot. 9pm, $5

The YEAH! Rock Block benefit show @ The End, ft. Kiddo. 9pm, 18+$5 donation (or however much you wanna give)

SATURDAY

Korean is Asian album release w/ Cortney Tidwell and The Lisps @ the 5 Spot. 9pm $5

Rocky Votolato w/ Matt Pond @ Exit/In. 9pm $12

Currently listening: the Coathangers album Scramble. I’m only a few songs into it upon posting, but it’s interesting to say the least. A bit bizarre at times, but decidedly lo-fi and sassy. You can get the whole album for free at Suicide Squeeze records until March 14th. I saw them at the Basement a year or two ago, and their live show is an essential component to their overall appeal. Thus, go see them live next time you get a chance. They’re from Atlanta, so I don’t see why they wouldn’t be hitting up Nashville within the next year or so. (Via Largehearted Boy)

There are several bigger shows happening this weekend, and you can read all about them at the Cream, but I’m going to focus on The Freakin’ Weekend, a mini-festival of house-shows (except for Sunday which is at Betty’s) put on by Nashville’s Dead.

Friday: Kickoff party at The Jungle (aka Sweetbriar House) feat. Ben Steine’s Money, Larry David & The Hipsters, special guests. FREE, all ages, 8pm.

Saturday: Night two at Glen Danzig’s House feat. The Beets, Ex Humans, Terrible Twos, Beach Fossils, Peacekillers, Natural Child, The Looking Glass. All for a mere $5. All ages, starts at 7pm.

Sunday: Night three at Betty’s Bar & Grill feat. Sisters, Grooms, Coasting, Videohippos, Lesser Alvarez Gonzalez, Daniel Pujol, So Jazzy. 21+, starts at 8pm. (I assume there’s a cover, but ND doesn’t say)

Here’s to the parties not getting busted up by the cops!
