Happy Memorial Day weekend!

There’s not shortage of good shows to check out this weekend, but before we get to the listings I have a few noteworthy local music tidbits to mention-

  • Creature Comfort are a talented new local band I’ve had the pleasure of playing shows with, and they’ve just released their debut album Fox Tales, which can be purchased digitally on bandcamp. Stream it here!
  • My band Scale Model just released a 2-song remix EP for “Do It Tonight” off our 2012 S/T EP. The remixes were done by Makeup & Vanity Set and The Leech Boyz. It’s totally free for download on our bandcamp page, so stream it and grab it! While you’re at it, also check out our limited edition tshirts designed by Funky Catsterz.

My picks for what shows to see this Memorial Day weekend in Nashville-

FRIDAY:

Nashville Pioneers pep rally part 2 ft. DJs Coach and La Force @ the Stone Fox. 9pm $5

SATURDAY:

Take the Power Back (all-girl Rage Against the Machine tribute), Gladiator (Jesus Lizard tribute), and Cio Cio San & The Half-Japanese Girls (Weezer tribute) @ Exit/In. 8pm $10 (Limited run of $5 presale tix may still be available at The Groove!) *There will be a very special guest performer at this show, and people will be talking about it for years, but you’ll just have to come to find out who it is!*

No Country For New Nashville 2-year anniversary party ft. Colorfeels, EL EL, and Beck’s Song Reader performed by Daniel Ellsworth, members of Milktooth, and more @ The Basement. 9pm $7 21+

Josephine Foster, The Cherry Blossoms, and Honey Locust @ The Stone Fox. 9pm $7

Those Darlins, Gills, Magnolia Sons, Vespers, Stagolee, Cooper & The Jam @ Eastside Hootenanny at East Park. 4-10pm Proceeds go to benefit Urban Green Lab. More info on East Side Hootenanny website.

You’d think there would more good shows Sunday night given the long weekend, but I couldn’t find anything I’m particularly thrilled about. Have a great weekend!

RSDCOM2010vectorIt’s that time of year again. Record Store Day 2013 is TOMORROW! That means lots of awesome day shows at the record stores around town, and lots of very exclusive/limited-release vinyl. Unfortunately it also means insanely obsessive fans/collectors camped out in front of said record stores at the asscrack of dawn waiting to be first in line to purchase the “RSD-only exclusive collectors edition midnight blue vinyl 7-inch test-pressing of (insert dead indie band frontman) farting during an early demo of (insert dead indie band name).”

I digress.

Seriously though, between the awesome RSD festivities and the regular shows happening, this is one helluva weekend for music in Nashville.

thefeaturesNashville’s hometown indie-pop heroes The Features are back with a new self-titled album on May 14th! They released the bouncy, catchy single “This Disorder” (which you can stream below) a while back, and just announced the official presale for the album on CD/Vinyl and iTunes. The pre-order on Bandcamp will also get you 2 free mp3s of your choice.

The boys will be performing at Grimey’s Record Store Day festivities along with Paramore, Hotpipes, Alanna Royale, Daniel Bachman, Josh Rouse, and PUJOL. They’re also playing a special free Frye Jam Session showcase this Friday night at Mercy Lounge with Nikki Lane, Odessa Rose, and Andrew Combs. Get there early if you want in- it’s limited to 300 capacity!

Before I get to the show listings for this weekend, I feel compelled to share this awesome video from Daft Punk, who you should know by now are releasing a new album on May 31st called Random Access Memories. They collaborated with quite a few notable players in the electronic music world, and created a series of short bio films introducing each one. The first is the legendary Giorgio Moroder:

Before I get to the show listings, I had to post this cool promo video for the upcoming QDProm at Mercy Lounge Feb. 16th. I’ve been doing photobooths at the monthly QDP parties for a few months now, and they made that video using the photos from the December edition. What is QDProm? It’s QDP, but bigger, with live bands, slow dancing, party favors, the regular QDP DJs, photobooth, and much more. Get your tickets now at www.tinyurl.com/qdprom and follow them on facebook and twitter for updates.
