A Few Good Shows: 4/19/13 (Record Store Day Madness)

It’s that time of year again. Record Store Day 2013 is TOMORROW! That means lots of awesome day shows at the record stores around town, and lots of very exclusive/limited-release vinyl. Unfortunately it also means insanely obsessive fans/collectors camped out in front of said record stores at the asscrack of dawn waiting to be first in line to purchase the “RSD-only exclusive collectors edition midnight blue vinyl 7-inch test-pressing of (insert dead indie band frontman) farting during an early demo of (insert dead indie band name).”
I digress.
Seriously though, between the awesome RSD festivities and the regular shows happening, this is one helluva weekend for music in Nashville.

Nashville’s hometown indie-pop heroes The Features are back with a new self-titled album on May 14th! They released the bouncy, catchy single “This Disorder” (which you can stream below) a while back, and just announced the official presale for the album on CD/Vinyl and iTunes. The pre-order on Bandcamp will also get you 2 free mp3s of your choice.
The boys will be performing at Grimey’s Record Store Day festivities along with Paramore, Hotpipes, Alanna Royale, Daniel Bachman, Josh Rouse, and PUJOL. They’re also playing a special free Frye Jam Session showcase this Friday night at Mercy Lounge with Nikki Lane, Odessa Rose, and Andrew Combs. Get there early if you want in- it’s limited to 300 capacity!

Catie Cameron has been one of my best friends for many years. She’s a talented, smart gal and also a great writer. For the past few years she has been working on achieving one of her childhood dreams- to write and publish a novel. Today I’m happy to share with you her Kickstarter campaign, which will raise the funds needed for her to self-publish Ms. Rhythm and Blues: A Rock & Roll Novel. It’s about a girl named Maggie who grows up in Nashville, TN in the 90s and immerses herself in the rock scene, and eventually opens her own rock club. Before I get into the show picks for this weekend, I must point out a bit of wonderful local rock news: Hotpipes have returned! Above is the cover art for their long-awaited new album Dust, which will be released via YK Records on May 7th. The band is “now Jonathan Rogers and Dan Sommers” according to their website. They’ll also be playing an album release show at Mercy Lounge on Sat. May 11th with Echo Group, with the band rounded-out by an all-star cast of local musicians including Dave Paulson, Jerry Pentecost, and Keith Lowen. Both of these bands wear their Walkmen influences on their sleeves, so this billing makes perfect sense. Bravo, fellas! Glad to have you back!

Joining us on the bill is the awesome and sexy Ponychase, as well as the fresh new sounds of Nudity. DJ John Brassil will also be spinning your favorite 80s new wave & post punk between bands.
