A Few Good Shows: 8/3/12

August 3, 2012

As usual, there’s no shortage of good shows to see in Nashville this weekend, both local and non-local. Here’s what sounds good to me.

FRIDAY:

Ponychase w/ Deloreans and Echo Group @ the 5 Spot. 9pm $5 21+

Majestico, Magnolia Sons, and Jamie Kent & The Options @ 12th & Porter. 9pm $10

Quichenight album release w/ Fancytramp, T. Rust, and New Pleasure @ The End. 9pm $5

Diarrhea Planet, The Weeks, Grass Giraffes, Junior Astronomers, and No Regrets Coyote @ Mercy Lounge. 9pm $7

SATURDAY:

Poly album release w/ Cortney Tidwell and Natalie Prass @ Zombieshop. 8pm $7

Ill Communication: A Tribute to the Beastie Boys @ Exit/In. 9pm $8

P.S. In case you missed it yesterday, the official lineup for Soundland 2012 was released. The headliner is My Morning Jacket, with support from Divine Fits, Young the Giant, Johnny Corndawg, JD McPherson, The Weeks, Kopecky Family Band, Wild Cub, Night Beds, PUJOL, Nikki Lane, Mystery Twins, and Kansas Bible Company. A fine lineup featuring a good mix of established locals, up-and-coming locals, and THE go-to outdoor festival act MMJ. Good job Jason, Janet, and all others who work so hard on this event every year!

Have a great weekend!

The waters surrounding 2012’s Soundland have been eerily quiet the past few months, but yesterday the announcement was made that the festival (summit? conference?) has been scaled back to one day, October 6th, and will take place downtown on the Lawn at Riverfront Park. It sounds like the event is moving toward more of a standard outdoor festival vibe than the SXSW-style/club-hopping-industry-showcase vibe of years past. The official lineup announcement is tomorrow, August 2nd. However, they rolled the dice and ran a special earlybird ticket sale for 48 hours only- $30. From the email blast:

The all-new SoundLand features a one-day outdoor extravaganza October 6, 2012 with music, art, food, and more in our biggest venue yet.

I’ve no doubt the shrinkage can be boiled down to an issue of quality vs. quantity, and this festival is run by some talented and smart people, so they chose to make Soundland 2012 one totally awesome day, rather than 4 pretty good days. I’m looking forward to the lineup announcement!

Before we get to the show listings, I must quickly share something totally awesome- a new wing of xkcd called “what if?” On this new blog xkcd founder and physics genius Randall Munroe answers bizarre hypothetical questions that random people send to him. He presents the answers with a touch of that same humor and wit that makes the web comic so awesome. My favorite so far is Relativistic Baseball, in which he explains that a baseball thrown at nearly the speed of light would cause a nuclear explosion. This guy is my hero.

On to the show listings for this weekend. Nashville is very busy this weekend with good rock shows!

As a TNTRC volunteer and long-time supporter of YEAH (Youth Empowerment through Arts & Humanities) I must first plug this Saturday’s Tennessee Teens Rock & Roll Camp showcase at Marathon Music Works. Doors are at 2:30pm and show starts at 3. We have 16 bands this year, and unlike past years where campers could choose between doing a cover song or writing their own, this year all bands wrote their own songs together. It was a big step but it has paid off, and believe me when I say there are some good songs this year! There will also be a raffle with tons of goodies! Being involved with this organization is one of the best things I’ve ever done and they need your support so please come out- the door and raffle money all goes right back into supporting the mission. Now for the rest of the listings:

Have a great weekend!

I didn’t fall of the face of the earth, I just totally forgot to post a disclaimer here that I would be out of pocket for a while taking photos at Bonnaroo. This was my 5th year there and we had amazing weather. It actually felt a bit chilly some nights! Anyway, please do check out the Nashville Cream for comprehensive coverage and lots of photos from me and Michael Bunch. Back soon y’all!

Heavy Cream is the perfect example of how a band should evolve. When you say a band has “matured” it can often have bad connotations- it can be treated as a nicer way of saying a band has gotten boring or lost their raw energy. That is most definitely NOT the case with Heavy Cream. They have matured, but in an entirely good way. The rhythm section is anchored solidly by Tiffany Minton’s furious and powerful backbeats, Mimi Galbarez’s riffs have gotten more interesting while maintaining that rudimentary charm they’ve always had, and frontwoman Jessica McFarland’s vocals… well, they’ve always been really good and they’re still really good. As for the new album, it’s solid and well-produced. I have a terrible tendency to talk a lot about the production value of albums when I review them on here, but I really can’t help it this time. Ty Segall produced this album and the real victory here is the drum sounds- they’re insane but just right. Distorted but not painful… weird but not too weird. The snare drum barely even sounds like a snare drum anymore… more like pounding on muffled trash can lid at times. But for some reason it works! And the somewhat beefed-up guitar tones actually complement the overall sound quite well. The songs are as catchy as ever- but most venture into a slightly more complex rhythmic territory. There are even a few slow-burners (well, slow in comparison to most of their material at least…) that take the band from their old “girl-Ramones” vibe to a more straight-ahead, fist-in-the-face rock & roll feel that reminds me more of the Runaways. That’s a very obvious comparison but it has to be made. The biggest point I want to make is that this band has done nothing but get better over time, and this new album is the best example. Grab it now via Infinity Cat Recordings.

There are plenty of great shows to catch on this extended weekend around Nashville. I’ll be out of town but if you’re around and need some good shows to see, look no further than here.

FRIDAY:

Pierced Arrows, Bad Cop, Ghost Dance, and Don’t @ The End. 9pm $7

How I Became the Bomb, Colorfeels, and NORM @ the High Watt. 9pm $7

A Re-release party for Chris Crofton’s first comedy LP “Pearls Before Swine: Live at the Springwater” @ Springwater. 10pm $5

Jeremy Lister, By Lightning, Oh Dang Lo Mein @ Mercy Lounge. 9pm $8 adv/$10 DOS

SATURDAY:

Nobody’s Vault But Mine: Dex Romweber Duo, Black Belles, Jane Rose & the Deadend Boys, Jeff Zentner, and Elin Palmer @ The Basement. 9pm $15
