A Few Good Shows: 5/18/12
May 18, 2012
I can’t believe it’s already Friday! It’s been a busy week but it’s time to figure out what shows to catch, but before the listings I must mention that Mercy Lounge has a brand-spakin’ new website designed by the talented Michael Eades. He’s done some pretty impressive stuff with video clips in the background of the main page. If you have an older, slower system like I do, it may take a second to fully load, but overall it’s worth it.
Now for what’s shakin’…
FRIDAY:
Lee Ranaldo Band w/ PUJOL and Wooden Wand @ Mercy Lounge. 9pm $15
Fool’s Gold w/ Fly Golden Eagle @ The High Watt. 9pm $10 adv/$12 DOS
Queer Dance Party (QDP) @ The 5 Spot. 10pm $1

MAYHEM Perform’s Prince’s album “Controversy,” ft. Dez Dickerson @ Mercy Lounge. 9pm $7
Everyday Fest presents: Fox Fun, Reid Magette, Dirty Dreams @ Brick Factory. 8pm SHARP! Show should be over by 10pm-
THEN, Everyday Fest presents: No Regrets Coyote EP release w/ Oh Dang Lo Mein, MOM, and Linear Downfall @ Zombie Shop. 10pm SHARP!
SUNDAY:
Ranch Ghost, The Ultras S/C, King Karl, Double Barrel, and DJ David Bermudez @ Drifters. NOON DAY SHOW and it’s FREE Y’ALL. I believe this is the annual vintage bike show, so there’ll be tons of cool bikes too.
Have a great weekend!
As you should know, this Satuday is National Record Store Day. Record stores (you know, the places you can actually walk into and touch a real album and buy it… imagine that) across the nation will be having huge special sales, and labels and artists across the nation have pressed limited edition vinyl releases, usually 45s, that will only be available at a record store, on Record Store Day. There are tons of awesome happenings here in Nashville, the biggest being Grimey’s “big ass outdoor sale.” They have a killer lineup of live music slated for the parking lot, and they always have tons of used records and CDs on sale for super cheap. Check out grimeys.com for the full lineup and schedule. East Nashville’s The Groove also has a killer lineup of bands playing on their backyard stage, and you can get most if not all of the official RSD exclusive releases there as well. Check their website for the full lineup and schedule. Those are the only two doing performances that I know of, but The Great Escape might be doing some sort of sale. There’s no mention of it on their website, however. Third Man Records will of course have lots going on in the way of sales and limited releases, etc… however they do not have live performances this year. (How can they possibly top Jerry Lee Lewis last year?)
Secondly, the flyer above is for a show that includes my band, thus a bit of shameless self promotion:
Come see Scale Model, Anchor Thieves, Century Club, and The Goldroom at The End Saturday night after all your RSD shopping/festivities! Anchor Thieves are releasing a free CD single, and Nashville’s own Griffin Technology will be giving away free RSD themed iPhone 4 cases. Find out more about Scale Model, the Goldroom, and Century Club (ex-Carter Administration) at their respective bandcamp pages. RSVP on Facebook here. Cover is only $5, show starts at 9:30pm, and the beer is cheap. Come party with us!
Burgers Spring 2012 Mixxxx
April 16, 2012
All I can say is- better late than never. I normally get my seasonal mixes out pretty close to the beginning of each season. My life has been pretty busy this spring and this is mostly a hobby for me, so things are running a little behind. I’ve been pretty obsessed with everything Gigamesh has touched lately, so of course he makes an appearance… I also was feeling a bit more housey than usual, so you’ll notice a few distinctly house-influenced tracks in there. And how could I not include Viceroy’s sun-drenched, poolside-ready remix of Mark Morrison’s 90s hit “Return of the Mack” ??? Enjoy/download:
Belated East Nashville Beer Fest/Craft Beer Week post
March 29, 2012
Y’all. I’m slackin’ this week. I fail at blogging. So sue me. I should have mentioned on Monday or even over the weekend that this week is craft beer week in Nashville, and it all leads up to the 2nd annual East Nashville Beer Festival in East Park on Saturday. I went last year and got soused on some amazing beer, and I’m VERY much looking forward to it this year, mostly because I now live a couple blocks from the location and can casually stroll down to it with my girlfriend. They’ve expanded everything this year, and I’m very excited about some of the specialty brews- rare/limited run beers from well-known names that you’ll probably never see anywhere other than at beer festivals such as this. The festival tickets sold out in only 2 hours when they went onsale Feb. 10th, but I’ll be you can find some on craigslist if you try really hard.
While the ENBF is the main event, there have been other fun things going on around town this week as part of Nashville craft beer week. I stopped by the Brooklyn Brewery tasting session at Woodland Wine Merchant yesterday and had their Local #1, Local #2, East India Pale Ale, and Monster Ale Barleywine. All fantastic in their own way. Tonight from 5-7 they’ll be having a Green Flash free tasting session, and Friday New Belgium will be in the store for some free tasting. There are other tastings and events going on elsewhere, so check the schedule for today and tomorrow’s festivities.
I must also take this opportunity to mention how pleased I am that we have several new local breweries popping up here in Nashville. TN’s laws are literally some the WORST in the nation for small-scale craft breweries, but it’s very encouraging to see the huge success of Yazoo and the emerging breweries such as Fat Bottom, Black Abbey, Broacast, Nashvillion, Jackalope, and Jubilee. (All of which will have beers at the ENBF.) Bosco’s and Blackstone will be there as well, but they are in a class of their own in my head- they are restaurants with breweries inside them. Their beers are a force to be reckoned with, however small-scale they may be! And Blackstone has just recently expanded their brewing to a separate facility and are bottling/distributing regionally now. I highly recommend their Chaser Pale- a Kolsch-style ale which is very light and refreshing. You don’t see Kolsch as a flagship beer from many craftbrewers, so I applaud them for doing it!
Ok, off my beer soapbox. Hopefully you have tix to this awesome event- if not, get some to the much bigger Music City Brewer’s fest in July.
A Few Good Shows: 1/6/11
January 6, 2012
I know it’s been a while. Sorry, after all the holiday-ing gets me out of a rhythm it takes a minute for me to get back into the swing of blogging.
This weekend is a tiny bit slow when it comes to rock shows, but here are a few things worth mentioning (and some shameless self-promotion):
FRIDAY:
Vitalic Noise presents CRAVE at Tavern. FREE, 21+, ft. resident DJs Losici (Josiah Lester) and Dali Drama (Jenn Harbin), and guest BURGERS (aka me). We’ll spinning the best in nu-disco/house/french touch/indie dance. Did I mention it’s FREE? It’s free.
The Dead Towns, Siberian Traps, The Bad Swears, & The Dirty Holidays @ The End. 9pm $5
SATURDAY:
The Tendoor, Kat Smo, Taxicab Racers, Ugly Kids Club @ The End. 9pm $5
Metal at the Mercy: a KISS tribute @ Mercy Lounge. 9pm $5
A Few Good Shows: 12/9/11
December 9, 2011
This weekend has a pretty good selection of show-going opportunities in Nashville. Here we go:
FRIDAY:
Vitalic Noise presents CRAVE at Tavern (1904 Broadway). Nashville’s hottest Friday night dance party is back in a new location, and last week was a very successful kickoff. This week’s DJ lineup includes Losici (Josiah Lester), Dali Drama (Jenn Harbin), and Burgers (me). FREE, 21+ 10pm
White Rabbits w/ SONOI @ Exit/In. 9pm $10
DJ Craze @ Mai. 10pm $???

SUNDAY:
The Greater Good, Dead Legs, Night Beds @ The Basement. 9pm 21+ $5
Have a great weekend!
P.S. If you haven’t seen the glory that is Texts From Bennett, take care of that problem right now.
A Few Good Shows: 12/2/11
December 2, 2011
Busy weekend. Lots of good shows and stuff to do in Nashville. Let’s get right to it-
FRIDAY:
Last Year’s Men, Fly Golden Eagle, Ranch Ghost @ The End. 9pm $7
Mashville 4 year anniversary+Girls & Boys Nashville @ Mercy Lounge. $5 (This one features Coach, Hands Off Sam, Wick-it, Kidsmeal, Bateman, Mike Vulcan, Wildcub, Kevin Perryman, Revenant, Jenn Harbin, DJ Orig, and others- a very diverse DJ lineup indeed.)
Vitalic Noise presents the return of CRAVE @ Tavern. FREE, 21+ 10pm-3am. CRAVE was becoming THE place to be on Friday nights when it was hosted at the Wine Loft, but then Wine Loft was shut down by its parent company. Justin and the Vitalic Noise team have been hard at work finding the perfect new home for CRAVE and they’ve found it at TAVERN (sister company to Virago, Whiskey Kitchen, and Kayne Prime. This new installment features DJ sets by Losici, Donny Rest, Vitalic Noise (Justin Katerberg), and d.Babe. Did I mention it’s FREE?
SATURDAY:
Happy Little Trees 7″ release show w/ Poly and Frances Foundation @ the Basement. 9pm 21+ $5
Th’ Legendary Shack Shakers w/ Split Lip Rayfield and the Dirt Daubers @ Mercy Lounge. 9pm $12 adv $14 DOS
Mr. Gnome w/ Cry Baby, Pushy Lips, and Thelma & the Sleaze @ The End. 9pm $7. Mr. Gnome was just named a “band to watch” by Rolling Stone, and I just checked out their record- it feels a bit scattered but there are some phenomenal tracks toward the middle and end. Moody, psychedelic, and dynamic, they never cease to just rock. I’ve heard very good things about their live shows and am thinking this could be one of those amazing shows that slips under the media radar for whatever reason. But I’d recommend not letting it slip under your radar.
SUNDAY:
Birdcloud, Denny & The Jets, Ranch Ghost @ the 5 Spot. 9pm $5 (Natural Child was on this bill initially but were replaced by Ranch Ghost.)

Fridays @ the Wine Loft: Vitalic Noise presents CRAVE
September 8, 2011
Last week I blundered in failing to mention the debut of Vitalic Noise’s new weekly dance party CRAVE, happening every Friday night at the Wine Loft in the Gulch. I was there, though, and a spectacular debut it was. This is gonna be THE place to be every Friday, because 1) it’s FREE, 2) there will be a rotating cast of great DJs spinning the best disco/house/electro/funk, 3) it’s centrally located in the Gulch and goes till last call, so you can be there all night OR stop by for a little dancing after the other show you attended earlier in the evening, 4) did I mention it’s FREE?
Now that I’ve properly plugged the event itself, I will plug this Friday specifically because the DJ lineup includes yours truly. Official lineup is: Losici (Josiah Lester), Burgers (me), Dali Drama (Jenn Harbin). So come on out, have a drink, and dance with us for FREE. (There are also drink and appetizer specials.)
As a special treat, enjoy the video for Craze’s new bangin’ track “Dance Alone”:
