Eating lunch with the Darlins in the Bronx.

So I’m back! It was a blast and I’d do it all again in heartbeat. I don’t have time to give a full rundown, but quite possibly the most memorable moment was realizing that a tornado was hitting Brooklyn while Those Darlins were soundchecking in Bowery Ballroom. Here’s the official weather report from the NWS. Needless to say, tornadoes are pretty rare in NYC. Thankfully we were in Manhattan while all this was happening. Those Darlins have some great new songs on their new record, and their setlist for this tour is mostly those new songs, peppered with the favs from their debut, and the free single “Nightjogger” which you can download at the Nashville Cream. Basically they’ve taken on a bit more of a pure rock & roll character, and drummer “Sheriff” Linwood Regansburg has taken on a much more prominent role in the songwriting, and even sings on one of the new songs, though they’re not yet playing that song live. Stay tuned for more on them and more on the results of my photo documentary project.

Meanwhile, here are some awesome things I came across while catching up on all my RSS feeds:

Vaccines absolutely, beyond a shadow of a doubt, do NOT cause autism. A new study explored every possible way that thimerosal containing vaccines (TCVs) could be linked to autism and there was none. Absolutely no connection whatsoever; the same findings as the many other studies that have been done to investigate the claims of the anti-vax crowd. In fact, the result hinted that the administration of TCVs between birth and 7 months may actually reduce the risk of autism. It’s very simple, get your kids vaccinated! If you don’t, you are a threat to public health. Vaccines are one of mankind’s greatest scientific breakthroughs and have saved countless lives. There will always be a miniscule (and utterly negligible) risk of a bizarre allergic reaction or other complication, as there is with any medication or vaccine, but that risk is far, far, FAR outweighed by the benefits. And those risks have now been proven once and for all NOT to include autism.

A pair of astronomers have made an official prediction that the discovery of the first truly earth-like exoplanet will happen in less than a year– May of 2011. They used a well-known methodology called Scientometrics to make this prediction. I’d venture to say that to me, nothing in the field of astronomy, or even science in general, is more exciting than the very likely possibility of life on other planets. The discovery of the first true earth twin is a major step in that path. I really hope this prediction comes true.

Five awesome facts about NASA’s next robotic mission to Mars, the Mars Science Laboratory (a.k.a. Curiosity) which will launch in late 2011.

23 amazing photographs from the 1940s and 50s of nuclear bomb tests conducted by the US Military. This New York Times photos series is utterly fascinating, mainly because of images 5 through 7. Most of us have seen plenty of images of the mushroom clouds created by nuclear blasts, but those 3 images are unlike anything I’ve ever seen before. They were taken with a super high-speed camera and literally captured the blast at the very instant the explosion began. If I saw this image out of context I would probably think it was a microscope image of some sort of virus. The amazing irony here is that both a virus and an atomic bomb are incredibly destructive, yet in such completely different ways.

The actual scale of the observable universe, from the smallest possible thing the largest possible thing, is utterly impossible for the human mind to comprehend. Mathematicians came up with the concept of “orders of magnitude” to help with this, but I say it’s still impossible for any human to really grasp. But this fun little interactive Flash animation is pretty cool way of displaying the concept. (Via Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson’s Twitter)

Let’s all face it, the big news show-wise this weekend is The Pixies playing two consecutive shows at the Ryman. This undeniably awesome, but I haven’t the money nor the means to go. I halfway missed the Pixies train in high school/middle school, so they will never have the significance to me that they do to some. The bands that cemented themselves firmly into my formative years were Nirvana, Weezer, and Green Day… amongst many others. But those were the main ones. So, yay Pixies?

Some other good stuff going down this weekend (besides the AMA’s):

FRIDAY:

There are a shitload of bands at the 5 Spot- Fly Golden Eagle, The Early Evening, Slow Claw, Chrome Pony and By Lightning are all playing as part of “Family Tree Vol. 2.” 9pm $5

Dozen Dimes, Frank The Fuck Out, and Diarrhea Planet @ The End. 9pm $5 (This is the Dozen Dimes’ album release show… I’m not up to speed on these things but I thought DD’s album came out a couple months ago… but whatevs, this is an awesome lineup regardless!)

SATURDAY:

Well, the 2nd Pixies show (tix still available!) is about it.

SUNDAY:

Whoa, sunday rocks…

Gentleman Jesse & His Men, Strange Boys, Cy Barkley, Natural Child @ Glen Danzig’s House. $5 7pm. I’ll be there.

Best Coast, Cults @ Mercy Lounge. $12, 8pm

The Love Language, Bows and Arrows @ Exit/In. $10, 8pm

MONDAY:

(Because I’ll be gone and not blogging for a week probably)

Keep On Movin’ celebrates their 2-year birthday. The weekly 5 Spot dance party/boogie-fest has been going strong for 2 years, so show ’em some love!

I must also mention that today is the LAST DAY to get early bird discounts on Next BIG Nashville tickets! Wristbands are $40 and VIP badges are $215, and after today the prices go up to $45 and $250, respectively. Act now or pay more later.

Before I leave for a week-long hiatus due to my road stint with Those Darlins, I must share one of the most ridiculously design-nerdy things I’ve ever seen. Apparently some super nerdy graphic designers had waaaay too much time on their hands and decided to figure out how many iterations of the word “helvetica” in 100 point un-kerned type would fit between the earth and the moon. Then they had some more time and decided to see how big, in points, the word helvetica would have to be to fit once between the earth and the moon. As ridiculous as this is, it makes me very happy. Click through to find out the results at kottke.org.

Have a great weekend and week, because it’ll probably be that long before you hear from me again on here.

First, I must point you to the official Next BIG Nashville schedule. It’s up, and it will probably change, but it’s there so start planning which sacrifices to make. Planning your schedule at these types of music festivals is always a delicate balance between seeing people you know and like, and branching out to see some new acts you might not get to see otherwise.

Secondly, I have some exciting news that some people know about, but others don’t. I will be doing a photo documentary project with Those Darlins next week; joining them on a week-long leg of their tour with Strange Boys and Gentleman Jesse & His Men. I got the idea after the death of famous rock photographer Jim Marshall last year. News of his death got me thinking about his photographs, and how a lot of the truly iconic shots are very casual, candid, off-beat images taken off the stage. I thought about how I could do more of that type of behind-the-scenes work (not that my images will ever be as iconic as Marshall’s shots of Bob Dylan, Janis Joplin, and the like), and I thought of Those Darlins. I’ve known them for years, they’re some of the best people I know, they have room in their van, and after some discussions with their awesome manager John “JT” Turner, this idea is now becoming a reality. They’re what most would consider a mid-level act, but they’re headed for higher places and I think it’s the right time to do this type of project with a band like them. Those Darlins know how to party, and I think the results of this little experiment will be interesting. So, if you’re in Chapel Hill, D.C., New York, Cambridge, or Brooklyn, I hope to see you at one of the shows! Obviously, I may not be posting much next week…

My other news is simply that Miami Horror is awesome and you should go buy their album now. Seriously, I’ve been seeing mp3’s from these guys popping up in the blogosphere for a few months and I kept thinking “oh, this is an awesome track… nice…” But just yesterday I saw my friend Joseph’s review of their debut album on his blog Nashville Nights and it finally clicked in my head that these guys were different than your average “3 or 4 singles a year” DJs/producers. I urge you to checkout the quality interview Joseph did with them as well… I totally agree with his sentiment that it’s hard to find a good, quality dance floor album these days. There really are no sleepers or filler on this album- pure quality all the way through. Honestly this material is exactly what I personally want out of electronic/dance music: it’s got a great disco-ey, funky groove to it, smooth bass lines, and most of all the songs are songs, not just a bunch of loops layered together that build and fade (via trancewave). If you like Cut Copy, AIR, or Neon Indian, you will love this record. This is the best thing to come out of Australia since Silverchair. J/K J/K J/K

Miami Horror-I Look To You (Ft. Kimbra)

Oh, and the link to buy the album goes to Amazon. Fuck iTunes and their non-mp3/non-DJable formats. And while I’m at it, fuck their new ugly skin/layout for iTunes 10, too.

This weekend’s show offerings are pretty intense. Here are a few suggestions that I think are awesome.

FRIDAY:

The biggest deal tonight is Nashville Cream’s 4 year birthday bash at Exit/In. The lineup features My So-Called Band covering Weezer’s Pinkerton, Tristen, Shaky Voices, and DJ sets from the Grimey’s staff. I will be running a photobooth, so be sure to come say hi. They also have tons of awesome door prizes, including a killer vinyl pack from Infinity Cat records.

Pardon the self-promotion here, but I have to mention that I also have an after-hours DJ gig tonight. It’s with the awesome Jane Dupree of Disco Terror Squad, and it’s at 508 Late Nite Lounge. It’s at (duh) 508 Leah Ave. and I spin from 2-3am. Party till the wee hours!

I have to also mention that the awesome Jasmin Kaset is releasing an album tonight at the Basement. She’ll be joined by Majestico and The Mattoid. I didn’t even know she was working on a record, but according to the Cream Jordan Lehning of the Non-Comms/Make Out With Violence fame produced it. That sounds like a match made in heaven to me, even if her voice sometimes gets a little too child-like for my taste. I stress sometimes.

In addition to the onslaught of releases that are happening this weekend, Kyle Andrews will be celebrating the release of his Kangaroo EP tonight at Mercy Lounge. He’ll be joined by Heypenny, Mother/Father, and Gold Motel.

SATURDAY:

The main story Saturday is the triumphant return of Left Can Dance at La Paz (formerly Ombi Bar, a.k.a. the original home of Left Can Dance). The disco/indie/post-punk dance trio will be returning to the decks for the first time in at least a year, if memory serves, for this event which they’re calling “Disco Ball & Chain.” It’s sort of a “pre-celebration” of the marriage of Sam Patton and Kelly Taylor, which comprise 2/3 of the trio. This will kick off about 9pm and cost $5 to get in. They also have some drink specials up their sleeve but I’m not sure what they are, but I’m sure it will involve margaritas, so prepare your liver accordingly.

That about does it for this weekend. Let’s party.

Makeup & Vanity Set (aka Matt Pusti aka DAAS) has been busy lately. Just last March he released the epically awesome self-titled album that marked the return of MAVS. (The project had been on a bit of a hiatus for a few years.) Now he’s released a new 6-song EP The Final Fire, and well, Pusti’s own description, “THIS RECORD IS AN 8-BIT KNIFE FIGHT” pretty much sums it up better than I ever could. He goes on to say, “EVERYTHING RECORDED ON CASSETTE TAPES. OLD SCHOOL NOISE. EVERYTHING AT BREAKNECK SPEED. THESE SONGS WERE WRITTEN IN BEDROOMS. ON LAPTOPS AND SAMPLERS.”

Yep, that’s about it. Now go get the EP!

From the self-titled ablum, “Putay’s Back”:

Makeup & Vanity Set-Putay’s Back

At some point recently, and I can’t for the life of me remember where/when, I recall hearing Brandon Jazz referred to as Nashville’s own local male version of Ke$ha. That’s surprisingly accurate, I say. Hell, his latest song “X-Ray Eyes” is actually about her. (Download it at the Cream, it’s a damn good song.) Mr. Jazz has proven himself to be quite the self-promoter, and while his “look at me!!!” style of attention-grabbing annoys the hell out of some, I find it quite amusing. Furthermore, if you have a good ‘ol sit-down with him, you’ll find that he’s actually a really nice dude. Sure, his band used to suck. Really bad. But one Ryan Truso (of the now-defunct Mean Tambourines) saw some honest raw talent in him, took him under his wing, taught him how to sing, and now we have a string of infectious pop gems such as “Radical Luv,” “Vultures (You Never Shut Up),” and most recently “X-Ray Eyes.”

The 7″ pressing of “Radical Luv” was funded by a Kickstarter campaign, and part of the funds from said campaign went to MusiCares. Tonight’s 8 off 8th at Mercy Lounge is doubling as the official release show for the 7″, and features a cast of great local bands including Heartbeater, Loose Cougar, DJ sets by Coach, and many more. Admission is free, but $5 gets you a copy of the 7″, and $20 gets you an amazing Radical Luv T-shirt. Just go. What have you got to loose?

Tonight also marks the official release of the “Vultures” remix EP. Mr. Jazz enlisted DPAUL, Justin Kase, myself (BURGERS), and a few others to remix the track. The remix EP will be available digitally on the Armed Forces bandcamp page tomorrow. I’ve also been told it’ll be on iTunes. For a limited time, though, you can grab my BURGERS remix right here:

The Armed Forces-Vultures (BURGERS REMIX)

Enjoy it in all of its Moog-tastic glory.

First of all, I must espouse how amazing last night’s Chromeo show + afterparty was. Oh. My. God. Of course it could never top seeing them with Daryl Hall (and his silvery flowing mane blown by TWO leaf blowers) at Bonnaroo this year, but still, last night was fucking heaven. I must congratulate How I Became the Bomb for BOTH of their amazing sets of Hall & Oates covers. I saw both and was blown away. Russell Hanberry (their moustachioed guitarist) had clearly been analyzing every John Oates dance move from the H&O music videos, because had that shit down. Chromeo’s set was of course amazing, and after going through my pics, which can be seen at the Cream (review will be up sometime later today), I have developed a bit of a man-crush on Dave Macklovitch. Especially after briefly meeting him backstage after the afterparty with HIBTB. Watching Jon Burr throw down some good convo with one of his favorite bands of all time was pretty… endearing? Awesome, definitely.

Now for the good stuff:

I apologize to other bands with shows this weekend, but I must do a bit of shameless self-promotion here. My band Powerbrrrd has two shows this weekend, and you should definitely come to at least one of them.

TONIGHT: We are playing at the End with Diarrhea Planet, Lewd Minx, and the Dirty Streets (from Memphis). It’s only $5 and we promise you a good time. The bands we are playing with are rad, especially Diarrhea Planet… seriously they’re one of the funnest live shows in town. You don’t wanna miss this!

SATURDAY NIGHT: We are playing a house show at 1805 Rosebank Ave., east Nashville. Spanish Candles and Frank the Fuck Out round out the bill, and they’re both perfect house show bands. Rowdy party punk in the best way possible. I will be doing a DJ set as BURGERS following the bands, and after last night, there will doubt be a few Chromeo tracks/remixes in there. There’s a $5 cover that gets you in, and all the beer you can drink because we have 2 kegs to float! Be sure to park along the road, in the proper direction, and don’t get wasted and act like a dumbass in the front yard because that shit pisses off neighbors and gets the cops called. Don’t be a douche.

Please do come out to one of these shows! You won’t regret it.

Chromeo tonight

August 26, 2010

So you know Chromeo is playing at the Cannery tonight, right? If not, you’re either not in Nashville (which is just fine), or you are in Nashville and need to have your head examined. I’ll be honest, it took me a second to get into Chromeo. 5 years ago I wasn’t nearly as into “smooth grooves” as I am now. But once I was in, I was IN. I had the distinct privilege of seeing them play with Daryl Hall at Bonnaroo this year (playing both their own and all the classic Hall & Oates tunes), and it was honestly one of the best shows I’ve EVER seen. That is not an exaggeration. The fact that Holy Ghost! and Telephoned are opening for them tonight makes this utterly a dream bill IMO. There might be a few tickets left online, but make no mistake, if you snooze on this one, you WILL LOSE. I have no doubt it will sellout online thus leaving none available at the door. On a side note: few people wear Wayfarers as well as David Macklovitch. On another side note: I’m really fucking jealous of my pal Sean Maloney who gets to interview/hang out with them today for American Songwriter.

What could be better than this show happening at the Cannery? How I Became the Bomb covering Hall & Oates songs upstairs at Mercy Lounge BOTH before and after the show, that’s what. Seriously, this is the best idea ever. No clue if Drew or HIBTB cooked this one up, but kudos either way. Oh, and HIBTB will joined by DJs Wild Cub (Keegan DeWitt’s alter-ego) and Rio for the afterparty. I seriously hope this barrage of awesomeness makes a good impression on Chromeo/makes them want to come back. It’s gonna be one helluva night.

I’m up to my eyeballs in all sorts of random business this week, therefore I’m going to share a few links and tidbits quickly today, and that’ll be it for this blog until early next week. Here goes:

That’s all I got. Now I’m gonna take care of some biz-nass and I’ll see you kids next week.

I’m swamped by a large project at work and dealing with a burglary of our house which occurred friday, so this will be short and sweet:

Nashville’s And The Relatives are gearing up for the release of their full-length debut album Green Machinery. I’ve known these dudes and been a fan for a good 2 years or more, and in that time they’ve really developed their own sound. You can stream the unmastered track “Hammer Down” at Future Sounds. You can also download 3 free tracks, 2 of which feature ATR Theory 8 labelmate Caitlin Rose on guest vocals, at their bandcamp. Needless to say, after hear “Hammer Down,” I’m eager to hear the rest of this album. I have a feeling it’s going to be my favorite material by them yet. Yes, they’re “good old indie rock” as FS describes, but I’ll be damned if it isn’t some of the best “good old indie rock” I’ve heard in quite a while.

Also, I would just like to comment that Arcade Fire and their management are pretty clever to offer the new album The Suburbs for sale on Amazon.com the very first day of its release. You can get it for a mere $3.99. That’s one hella good way to score higher album sales in week 1, and I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if they end up charting in the top 5.
