A Few Good Shows: 8/19/11
August 19, 2011
Well, this weekend is literally bursting at the seams with awesome music to go see. So if you live in Nashville and you’re not out seeing at least 1 good show this weekend, you have a problem.
FRIDAY:
Heartbeater, Bows & Arrows, and Action! @ the 5 Spot. 9pm 21+ $5(This is Heartbeater’s FINAL show, so if you’re a fan, don’t miss it!)
GLOVES, w/ Vitalic Noise, Jenn Harbin, and Mindub @ Virago Rooftop. 9pm $3. My man Justin at Vitalic Noise has been consistently bringing top-notch touring DJs from around the world right to our doorstep here in Nashville, and this week he’s trying something new: a rooftop party. GLOVES is one of my favorite DJ/producers and his brand new remix of New Zealand up-and-comer Kimbra’s song “Cameo Lover” has been on repeat lately. And where’s he from? Melbourne Australia. I am repeatedly blown away by amount of amazing sexy/smooth disco goodness coming out of that city. Cut Copy, Miami Horror, Cassian… the list goes on and on. This is one not to miss! For more info check out the Vitalic Noise blog.
SATURDAY:
8th Ave South is gonna be a madhouse on Saturday night.
Nashville Cream 5th anniversary party w/ The Features, Tristen, and Evan P. Donohue @ Third Man Records. 8pm, SOLD OUT. If you snoozed, you loozed. As I understand it, The Features will be playing a very special set that’s different from their album release party at Mercy Lounge 1 week later.
Up The Antics Nashville Block Party w/ Turbo Fruits, Delta Spirit, The Rosebuds, Surfer Blood, and The Wild Feathers @ Mercy Lounge/Cannery parking lot. 6pm, 18+, FREE w/ RSVP here.
Up The Antics afterparty w/ DJ set from Pat Mahoney (of LCD Soundsystem) @ Mercy Lounge. FREE w/ above RSVP.
Kyle Andrews in-store performance at Grimey’s. FREE, 5pm
The Clutters, Chocolate Horse, Century Club @ the 5 Spot. 9pm 21+ $5
SUNDAY:
Nashville’s Dead presents: Heavy Cream, Feral Beat, Useless Eaters @ The Basement. 9pm 21+ $5.
I have a feeling Nashville’s collective liver is gonna be hurting after this weekend.
Sammy Bananas tonight at Mai/thoughts on the A-Trak show
April 28, 2011
Vitalic Noise is at it again, bringing Fool’s Gold’s own Sammy Bananas to Mai tonight. Mr. Bananas is quite the expert remixer, and made a splash last year with his own original track “Move Your Body.” He’s also one half of Telephoned, though I’ve never been much of a fan of the duo. Other DJ’s are Vitalic Noise and Coach, and Cherub will be performing live on VN’s trademark mobile stage setup. It all goes down tonight at Mai at 10pm and will run you $5 if you’re 21+ or $8 if you’re 18-20.
Speaking of Fool’s Gold, it should be common knowledge that FG is run by the one and only Alain Macklovitch, A.K.A. A-Trak, who played with Kid Sister and Glasslamp Killer at Limelight last Saturday here in Nashville. As far as I know, it was his first visit to Nashville, and I sure hope he doesn’t think the only dance music crowd in town is the glowstick-raver-bro crowd. The outdoor Dayglow festival which was originally scheduled for the previous Friday (4/15) got postponed due to the nasty weather, and the promoter ended up combining that event with the A-Trak/Kid Sister/Glasslamp Killer show. A-Trak killed it, but I can’t help but get the feeling he threw in more hard/ravey-er material than he normally would have, just to appease the crowd of neon glowpaint covered bros in front of him. When the events were combined the ticket prices of the Dayglow event took precedence and thus the ticket price to see A-Trak went from $10 (roughly) to $35. I’m quite sure a lot people who wanted to see the A-Trak show ended up not going, and thus A-Trak ended up playing for a crowd of people who, for the most part, weren’t really fans of his. They still clearly enjoyed it, and hopefully he made a few new fans in the process, but I’m sure he felt a bit… awkward. But honestly this was probably the best possible solution to the problems at hand, and I commend Ultimo for making it all come together. We still got to hear all the staples one would expect in an A-Trak set- the Duck Sauce tunes (including their brand new remix of Chromeo’s “Hot Mess”), some A-Trak remixes such as the Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ Heads Will Roll, and some furious scratch work sprinkled here and there.
Back tomorrow with the usual Friday rundown of what to see this weekend.
La Paz Late Night presents: ROBO BOOGIE
March 10, 2011
This Saturday Vitalic Noise, Potamus and I have cooked up another amazing party for you at La Paz. ROBO BOOGIE is going to be extremely 80s and extremely robo-tastic. It’ll cost you only $2 at the door if you come in some sort of robot attire, and $3 without. Seriously, just wear some silver lame or spandex, or an aluminum foil hat and we’ll let you in for $2.
On top of that, we’ll have our usual cheap drink deals- $2.50 PBR tallboys, $4 margaritas, and $2 jello shots. We’ll also have some robot/80s themed mixed drinks.
I’m also compiling a playlist of 80s visuals that’ll be shown on the wall.
RSVP on our facebook event here, “like” the LPLN facebook page here, and follow us on twitter @lapazlatenight. Also don’t forget that my new, 80s-tinged mix for spring 2011 is now up and available to download:
Seriously, this will be every bit as fun as our 90’s night was last month, so whether you’re with us all night or you make us your official afterparty, a good time will be had!
Burgers: Spring 2011 Mixxxx
March 7, 2011
I decided to release my spring mix a little early, mainly to coincide with this weekend’s 80’s/robot themed La Paz Late Night– ROBO BOOGIE. Plus, we can all agree that spring could use a little encouragement to get the fuck HERE. This mix has a deliberate 80s tinge, for obvious reasons. Enjoy/download:

LPLN presents 90s Night this Saturday/other weekend shows
February 18, 2011
First and foremost, I must self-promote for just a moment. This Saturday night will be the 3rd installment of the new La Paz Late Night series hosted by myself (Burgers), Potamus, and Vitalic Noise. This month we’re doing a 90s theme and it’s going to be the most ridiculous night of unironic nostalgic pleasure you’ve seen in quite some time. We’ve got all the danceable jams you can imagine from the 90s, even a few “jock jams,” as well as lights and a projector that will be showing classic 90s films like Clueless and Reality Bites on the wall. We also have our usual cheap drink specials- $2 jello shots/$2.50 PBR tallboys/$4 margaritas. It’s a meager $2 to get in if you come in 90’s attire, $3 if you come in 2011 attire. DO IT.
Now for some other stuff to do this weekend:
FRIDAY:
Doug Stanhope w/ The Mattoid @ Exit/In. 9pm, $20
Jimmy Eat World w/ David Bazan @ the Cannery. 9pm, $25 adv./$27 DOS BUT I’M PRETTY SURE IT’S SOLD OUT.
SATURDAY:
Well duh. You’re coming to La Paz Late Night.
BUT, if you just can’t do unironic nostalgia thing, you could go see Cheap Time, D. Watusi, Slammers, and Fox Fun at Glen Danzig’s House. That’s only $2 and starts at 7pm.
Have a great weekend, but first enjoy this extremely dorky but hilarious video/song “Tonight I’m Frakkin’ You”. (Tip to the producer of the song: your vocals are way, way too loud in the mix.)

Make-Out with Violence on Netflix/Bit Funk at Mai tonight/Vids from last Powerbrrrd show
January 27, 2011
If you have Netflix, I strongly recommend putting the phenomenal, Nashville-made film Make-Out with Violence in your queue right now. It just recently officially became rentable, so take advantage of that and get it. Seriously, go do it, here’s the link. I’ve mentioned this movie before, so you should at least have some clue about it if you read this blog somewhat regularly. If you’ve already seen it, at least go into your Netflix and give it a 5-star rating (or whatever you think it deserves) because these people deserve it. They deserve to finally start making some of their money back on this film. Also, Yewknee and We Own This Town report that the soundtrack is out now on vinyl. Clearly, the 40-something tracklist had to whittled down quite a bit to fit onto a vinyl LP, but from what I understand they kept the best of the best. Grab it here.
One of my favorite electronic producers/remixers is coming to town tonight at Mai. Yes, the amazing BIT FUNK will gracing Nashville with his slick, smooth, and funky style of nu-disco. Seriously, I flipped a lid when I first heard he was coming. It’s part of the monthly “VITAL” series hosted by my buds at Vitalic Noise. I heard there will be confetti cannons. And fog. And whatever else your disco heart desires. Seriously, be there. Robot Ears and Vitalic Noise DJs will open up. Starts around 10, only costs $6 to get in ($8 if you’re a young’n), and get this- 100% of the door money is going to Global Tribe, a very worthy cause. If you need more reasons to come, check out Bit Funk’s Soundcloud. I dare you not to dance.
*UPDATE* APPARENTLY BIT FUNK HAD TO CANCEL DUE TO THE SNOW IN NYC PREVENTING HIS TRAVEL. BUT JENSEN SPORTAG IS FILLING IN, WHICH IS A VERY FITTING REPLACEMENT.
Finally, just a quick mention that our friends in Diarrhea Planet were kind enough to take some video of the final Powerbrrrd show last friday at Springwater. Also, our friend at Dixie Downturn were kind enough to blog about it, so head over and watch them there. We love you, DD and DP!
La Paz Late Night presents: FREEZE OUT!
January 13, 2011
This Saturday marks the return of the resurrected La Paz Late Night series. Justin Katerberg (Vitalic Noise) and I have been working hard on this one, so please do at least make us part of your evening plans this Saturday night. We’ve got a very special guest DJ filling in for Potamus, who’s out of the country this month: Myrryrs. Recently signed to Discobelle and Idiot House records, they’ve been blowing up the House/Minimal world in the past few weeks. Cover is a meager $2, and we’ve got $2 jello shots, $4 margaritas, and $2.50 PBRs to help loosen your ass for the dancefloor. La Paz is on Elliston Place, just a block up from Exit/In. We are your unique break from the trend, or your pregame for sticking with the trend. We won’t dissapoint!
“Like” us on facebook, rsvp to the event page and invite your friends, and follow us on twitter.

NYE plans and some good 2011 lists
December 31, 2010
I’m not going to attempt to rundown all the party possibilities for tonight in Nashville. Just head over to the Nashville Cream and check out their NYE flow chart. There’s really nothing better for determining your course of action for tonight. Whatever you do, be safe and if you plan on drinking, arrange for a DD or a cab or Zingo or SOMETHING.
Instead of creating or linking to any “best of” lists about 2010, I thought I’d round up a couple of articles about what to expect in the science world in 2011.
Discovery News: The Biggest, Boldest, and Baddest Space Missions of 2011
Live Science: The Top Science Breakthroughs That 2011 May Bring
That’s it. I’m out. See you in 2011.
This Saturday- La Paz Late Night Presents: Tacky Holidisco
December 2, 2010
Remember last fall/winter when you could go to La Paz (now in Ombi Bar’s old digs on Elliston) and dance the night away with DJ Potamus and friends every Friday? Yeah, it was called La Paz Late Night, and though the former owner put the brakes on it after a few months, the new owner is all about some dance parties, so Potamus and I have brought LPLN back from the grave! We’re gonna be doing it on the monthly instead of the weekly, and the first party of the new era is THIS SATURDAY: Tacky Holidisco. We’ve enlisted the help of DJ collective/blog/party promoters Vitalic Noise as well, and between the three of us it should be a party to remember, every month. We’ll be spinning a smooth mix of classic disco, nu disco, french house, and electro. We also have some irresistible drink deals- $2.50 PBRs, $4 Margaritas, and a round of $2 jello shots at midnight. We will also have a special prize for the tackiest holiday get-up. As always, dark corner makeout sessions are encouraged. What more could you ask for on a Saturday night? Here’s the skinny, in case you didn’t feel like actually reading all that:
La Paz Late Night Presents: Tacky Holidisco
THIS SATURDAY DEC 4th at La Paz Mexican Restaurant: 2214 Elliston Pl.
FREE 10-11pm, $3 after 11, ages 21+ only
$2.50 PBRs/$4 margaritas/$2 jello shots at midnight
Disco/house/electro by DJs Potamus, Burgers, and Vitalic Noise
For a sample of what you’ll hear, check out my latest mixtape BURGERS Fall 2010 MIXXXX below, or tune into 91.1 WRVU tonight from 6-8pm, as I’ll be performing a mini-mix on Sam & Kelly Patton’s awesome show Penguin Parade.
